Brassard Named AHL Rookie of the Month

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Derick Brassard has been named Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for October, the American Hockey League announced today. Brassard is in his first professional season with the Blue Jackets’ AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.

Brassard, 20, appeared in all 12 games during the month of October for the Crunch and scored four goals and 12 assists for 16 points, finishing the month tops in the AHL in assists and points. He had a six-game point-scoring streak from Oct. 5-24 to start the season (3-6-9) and collected a point in 10-of-12 games. In recognition of his achievement, he will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Crunch home game.

The Blue Jackets’ first pick, sixth overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft Brassard tallied 44-72-116 with 92 penalty minutes in 58 games with Drummondville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League during the 2005-06 season. He was named a First Team QMJHL All-Star and received the Michael Bossy Trophy as the league’s best professional prospect. After missing most of the 2006-07 season due to a shoulder injury, he returned to collect 6-19-25 in 14 regular season games and added 9-15-24 in 12 postseason games. This past preseason with the Blue Jackets, the Hull, Quebec native notched 0-5-5 and was +2 in six games, finishing tied for second on the club in points.

The Blue Jackets return to action Sunday to host Central Division rival St. Louis at Nationwide Arena. Game time is set for 5 p.m. ET., with the Blue Jackets Live pre-game show starting at 4:30 p.m. The game also will broadcast live on the Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations WBNS-AM, Sports Radio 1460 The Fan and WWCD-FM, CD101.
