C Derick Brassard (dislocated shoulder, Dec. 18) will miss the rest of the season… LW Fredrik Modin (Mar. 5 at Nashville) is day-to-day… D Ole-Kristian Tollefsen (Injured Reserve, Feb. 21) is expected to miss four to six weeks… LW Jason Chimera (Injured Rerserve, Mar. 2) is expected to miss four to five weeks… Man Games Lost to Injury: 267.
CAPTAIN ENJOYS BIG WEEK: LW Rick Nash was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week for Mar. 2-8 after tallying 4-2-6 in three games. On Mar. 7, he registered his fourth career hat trick with three unassisted goals in an 8-2 win at Detroit. It was the first "unassisted" hat trick since Montreal's Maurice "Rocket" Richard accomplished the feat Mar. 14, 1948 at the NY Rangers. The hat trick was Nash’s third against the Red Wings, his second at Joe Louis Arena and second against Detroit this season (had all three goals in a 3-2 Blue Jackets overtime win Jan. 27 at Nationwide Arena). With his hat trick, Nash pushed his season totals to 31-33-64 in 62 games, giving him 30 or more goals for the fourth time in the past five seasons. It was also his 20th multi-point game of the season, setting a franchise record in that category (previous record of 19 was shared by David Vyborny, 2005-06 and 2006-07; and Ray Whitney, 2002-03).
MASON CLOSING IN ON CLUB RECORDS: Rookie G Steve Mason stopped 44-of-46 shots in Saturday's win at Detroit to improve to 26-16-3 with a 2.24 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and eight shutouts in 46 games this season. He needs one more win to tie the franchise record for wins by a goaltender in a season (27-Marc Denis, 2002-03) and is one shutout shy of matching Pascal Leclaire's club record of nine set in 2007-08. Mason continues to lead the NHL in shutouts, while ranking second in goals-against average, ninth in save percentage and 10th in wins.
WILLIAMS MAKING A POINT: C/RW Jason Williams has tallied 7-9-16 and is +5 in 23 games since being acquired in a trade from Atlanta, pushing his season totals to 14-20-34 and -4 in 64 games. He has been particularly hot of late, collecting 5-6-11in the last 11 games with goals in two-straight and points in his last three games (2-2-4). He notched 1-1-2 at Detroit on Mar. 7, recording his second game-winning goal as a Blue Jacket (and second against his former Detroit teammates) and fourth overall.
BLUE JACKETS MAKE PAIR OF MOVES AT TRADE DEADLINE: Columbus made two moves on the NHL's Mar. 4 trade deadline, acquiring C Antoine Vermette from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for G Pascal Leclaire and a second round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft and acquiring G Kevin Lalande from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft… Vermette collected an assist, was +1, won 10-of-20 face-offs and logged 18:02 of ice time in his CBJ debut at Detroit on Mar. 7. He has tallied 9-20-29 and 42 penalty minutes in 63 games this season and has registered 80-88-168 and 205 penalty minutes in 360 career games… Lalande was assigned to Syracuse and made his Crunch debut at Hamilton on Mar. 7 and stopped 20-of-22 shots in a 3-0 loss.
THIS WEEK'S FOES BOAST .655 WINNING PERCENTAGE: Columbus faces what could be its most daunting week of the season this week as it faces off against the team with the most points in the NHL (Boston), the defending Eastern Conference champions (Pittsburgh), the fourth place team in the Western Conference (Chicago) and defending Stanley Cup champions (Detroit). The combined record of the four teams on the Blue Jackets’ schedule this week is 157-75-32 (Boston, 43-15-9; Pittsburgh, 35-26-6; at Chicago, 36-19-9: and Detroit, 43-15-8), which translates into a .655 winning percentage.
BEASTS AGAINST THE EAST: The Blue Jackets have gone 10-3-1 in games against Eastern Conference teams this season, outscoring the opposition 40 to 22… G Steve Mason has gone 9-1-0 with a 0.99 goals-against average, .964 save percentage and five shutouts in 10 games against the Eastern Conference… C R.J. Umberger also tallied 9-2-11 and has a plus/minus rating of +5 in 14 games against the East this season.
MISCELLANEOUS: Since beginning the season 3-6-0 in their first nine games, the Jackets have gone 30-21-6… Columbus has posted an 11-7-1 record since the All-Star break… With 16 games remaining, the Blue Jackets are closing in on franchise records for wins (33-27-6; 35-43-4 in 2005-06), home wins (20-10-2; 23-18-0 in 2005-06) and road wins (13-17-4; 15-23-3, 2006-07)… Saturday's 8-2 win over Detroit was the club's third in a row against the Red Wings and also represented franchise records for goals in a game (previous mark was seven - five times, Oct. 23, 2007 at Chicago in a 7-4 win, most recently) and largest margin of victory (previous record was five – six times, Jan. 2, 2009 at Colorado in 6-1 win, most recently).
