OLYMPIC BREAK BEGINS FOLLOWING SUNDAY'S GAME
The Blue Jackets and the National Hockey League will suspend play following Sunday's games due to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which begin Friday in Vancouver. The Blue Jackets will return to practice on Wednesday, February 24, at 2 p.m. The club will have six players representing their countries at the Olympic Games – RW Rick Nash (Canada), LW Fredrik Modin, and C Samuel Pahlsson (Sweden), D Fedor Tyutin (Russia), D Jan Hejda (Czech Republic) and D Milan Jurcina (Slovakia). Hejda will be making his Olympic debut, while the others will all be playing in their second consecutive Games. Pahlsson and Modin helped Sweden win the gold medal at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.
NOEL REPLACES HITCHCOCK BEHIND THE BENCH, WINS FIRST TWO GAMES
The Blue Jackets relieved Ken Hitchcock of his duties as head coach on Feb. 3 and named assistant coach Claude Noel the club's interim head coach. Noel, who posted a 271-191-64 record as a head coach in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League and led the Milwaukee Admirals to the 2004 AHL Calder Cup championship, posted wins in his first two games behind the bench. He became the third CBJ head coach to win his debut, joining Doug MacLean (3-0-0 in his first three games) and Gerard Gallant, when the Jackets beat the Stars 2-1 on Feb. 4. MASON RETURNS TO CALDER WINNING FORM
G Steve Mason went 2-0-0 with a 0.50 GAA, .980 SV% and one shutout in two games last week, stopping 50-of-51 shots and coming within :47 of posting back-to-back shutouts. He made 24 saves in a 2-1 win over Dallas on Feb. 4, allowing the lone goal at 19:13 of the third period after the Stars pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker. Two nights later, he stopped 28 shots in a 4-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres to record his third shutout of the season. Mason, who was the Calder Trophy winner as NHL rookie of the year in 2008-09, has gone 4-2-0 with a 2.17 GAA and .921 SV% in his last six starts.
CAPTAIN PLAYS IN 500TH NHL GAME; REGISTERS 25TH GOAL IN SIXTH-STRAIGHT SEASON
RW Rick Nash is riding a four-game scoring streak (1-3-4) and has points in six of the last seven games (3-4-7), nine of the last 11 (6-6-12) and has collected 6-10-16 in his last 18 games after scoring his 25th goal of the season vs. Buffalo on Feb. 6. He has registered a point in 38-of-60 games this season and his longest streak without a point has been two games. He has collected 25-29-54 in 60 games and leads the club in goals, assists, points, shots (208 – sixth in the NHL) and ice time among forwards (21:11). He played in his 500th NHL game on Feb. 4 vs. Dallas, becoming the second player in club history to play in 500 games as a Blue Jacket (David Vyborny, 543).
