Feb. 28, 2004 –
David Vyborny tied a franchise record for points in a game with five as he scored a goal and added four assists to lead the Blue Jackets to a 5-4 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche at Nationwide Arena. Trailing 2-0 heading into the second period, Vyborny scored Columbus’ first goal in the second period and set up Jaroslav Spacek’s game-winner at 3:24 of overtime. His five-point night matched those of Geoff Sanderson (4-1-5, Mar. 29, 2003 vs. Calgary), Andrew Cassels (1-4-5, Mar. 29 vs. Calgary) and Espen Knutsen (0-5-5, Mar. 24 2001 vs. Calgary).

Acquired LW Scottie Upshall and D Sami Lepisto from Phoenix in exchange for D Rostislav Klesla and LW Dane Byers… Acquired C Greg Moore and C Michael Chaput from Philadelphia in exchange for LW Tom Sestito… Feb. 26 – Claimed D Craig Rivet off waivers from the Buffalo Sabres… Feb. 25 – Placed LW Kristian Huselius on Injured Reserve… Feb. 22 – Activated LW Derek Dorsett off Injured Reserve… INJURY REPORT: LW Kristian Huselius (Feb. 18 at Chicago) is day-to-day… C Derick Brassard (Feb. 16 vs. Los Angeles) is expected to miss at least two to three weeks… Man Games Lost to Injury: 144.

Columbus acquired LW Scottie Upshall and D Sami Lepisto from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for D Rostislav Klesla and LW Dane Byers. Upshall has registered 80-85-165, 315 PIM and is +36 in 340 career NHL games with Phoenix, Philadelphia and Nashville, including 16-11-27, 42 PIM and +5 in 61 games this season. Lepisto has collected 5-22-27, 115 PIM and is +17 in 131 career games with Phoenix and Washington, including 4-7-11, 60 PIM and +7 in 51 games this season. Klesla, who was the Blue Jackets’ first draft pick, fourth overall in the 2000 Entry Draft and the last remaining player who appeared in the inaugural 2000-01 season, registered 41-92-133 and 508 PIM in 515 games with the club. He had picked up 3-7-10 and 26 PIM in 45 games this season.

The Blue Jackets claimed defenseman Craig Rivet off waivers from the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 26. Rivet, who was Buffalo’s captain, has registered 49-187-236 and 1,148 penalty minutes in 909 career games with the Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks and Sabres. He has also tallied 4-19-23 and 69 penalty minutes in 69 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, averaging 22:35 time on ice in those contests. He has spent the past three seasons in Buffalo, collecting 4-38-42 and 237 penalty minutes in 165 games. He has tallied 1-2-3 and 12 penalty minutes in 23 games this season.

Feb. 22 – at COLUMBUS 4, Nashville 0:
Steve Mason made 20 saves and Rick Nash scored twice in a four-goal third period to lead the Blue Jackets to the win. Nash’s first goal at 1:11 of the third broke a scoreless tie and his second at the 19:09 mark was the club’s second on the power play… Columbus outshot Nashville 30 to 20, including 13 to 3 in the third period… Feb. 25 – at COLUMBUS 5, Phoenix 3: Trailing 2-0 late in the first period, the Jackets tied the game on goals by R.J. Umberger and Jakub Voracek heading into the second. Rookie Matt Calvert, who assisted on Umberger’s goal, then scored a natural hat trick to lead Columbus to the win. The Jackets went 3-of-9 on the power play, while holding the Coyotes to 0-of-5 with the man advantage… Feb. 27 – at Nashville 3, COLUMBUS 2: David Legwand scored with 1:35 left in the third period to cap a come-from-behind win for the Predators. After a scoreless first, the Jackets took a 1-0 lead into the third period thanks to a Matt Calvert power play goal at 14:17 of the second. The Predators took a 2-1 lead on goals by Shea Weber and Jonathon Blum before the Jackets tied the game at 2-2 on a Kris Russell power play goal at the 12:34 mark. Pekka Rinne made 25 saves for Nashville, while Mathieu Garon made 25 saves for the Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets enter the week with 68 pts. in 61 games and rank 12th in the Western Conference standings. The club is six points out of fifth place, five points out of sixth and four points out of seventh and has at least one game in hand on each of the teams currently ahead of them. As of Monday, Feb. 28, the teams ahead of Columbus are: 1) Vancouver, 87 pts. (63 GP)… 2) Detroit, 82 pts. (62 GP)… 3) San Jose, 78 pts. (63 GP)… 4) Phoenix, 76 pts. (64 GP)… 5) Los Angeles, 74 pts. (62 GP)… 6) Calgary, 73 pts. (64 GP)… 7) Minnesota, 72 pts. (62 GP)… 8) Dallas, 72 pts. (62 GP)… 9) Chicago, 72 pts. (62 GP)… 10) Nashville, 72 pts. (63 GP)… 11) Anaheim, 71 pts. (63 GP).

The Blue Jackets have posted an 11-4-3 record in their past 18 games since January 14. During that span, the club has outscored its opponents 60 (3.33 per game) to 47 (2.61) and converted 17-of-70 power play chances (24.3 pct.) and successfully killed off 52-of-60 opponent power plays (86.7 pct. penalty killing) over their last 18 games. In their previous 23 games, the Jackets averaged 2.13 goals per game (49), allowed 3.70 per game (85), converted 13.4 pct. on the power play (11-of-82) and 74.2 pct. penalty killing (72-of-97).

The Blue Jackets have converted 17-of-70 on the power play (24.3 pct.) over the past 18 games to improve to 37-of-231 on the year (16.0 pct.). After failing to score more than one power play goal in a game in its first 48 of the season, the club has scored two or more six times in its last 13 outings, including four in a row (9-of-23/39.1 pct.). Columbus ranks 10th in the NHL in road power play at 18.9 pct. The Jackets have also killed off 52-of-60 opponent power plays (86.7 pct.) over the past 18 games to improve to 192-of-237 (81.0 pct.) on the season. Columbus ranks fourth in the NHL in penalty killing at home at 86.8 pct.

The Blue Jackets have gone 11-4-3 in their last 18 games, 8-2-1 in their last 11 and 5-1-1 in their last seven… Columbus is 4-1-1 in its last six games at Nationwide Arena… Columbus had its club record eight-game regulation unbeaten (6-0-2) and six-game winning streaks on the road snapped in a 3-2 loss at Nashville on Feb. 27… With a 15-11-4 record through 30 games this season, the club has already surpassed the total number of road wins of seven of its previous nine seasons (2000-08, 2009-10) and is one win shy of the club record of 16 set in 2008-09 (16-18-7)… The Blue Jackets are 16-7-7 in one-goal games, including 8-6 in overtime (4-3 shootouts)… Columbus is 28-6-2 when tied (11-4-2) or leading (17-2-0) heading into the third period… Columbus has 21 games remaining in the regular season – 10 at home and 11 on the road.

CALVERT COLLECTS FIRST NHL HAT TRICK, NAMED NHL’S THIRD STAR OF THE WEEK Rookie LW Matt Calvert tallied 5-1-6, 14 shots and was +2 in three games last week to earn NHL Third Star of the Week honors. He scored a goal, fired off four shots and was even in a 4-0 win over Nashville on Feb. 22; became the second rookie in club history (Nikita Filatov) to record a hat trick with 3-1-4, including the game-winning goal, seven shots and a +2 plus/minus rating in a 5-3 win over Phoenix on Feb. 25; and finished the week with 1-0-1, three shots and was even in a 3-2 loss at Nashville on Feb. 27. He has 10-4-14 and is +3 in 21 games since being recalled from Springfield (AHL) and is riding four-game point and goal streaks (6-2-8).

G Steve Mason is 7-1-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average, .942 save percentage and two shutouts in his last eight games, stopping 229-of-243 shots… LW Rick Nash has collected points in 17 of the last 20 games (11-13-24) and with 29-27-56 in 60 games is one goal shy of hitting the 30-goal mark for the fourth-straight season and sixth time in his eight NHL campaigns… LW R.J. Umberger has picked up 6-12-18 in his last 15 games to raise his season totals to 20-27-47 in 61 games… C Derek MacKenzie has collected 2-7-9 in his last 13 games, including 2-4-6 in his last seven outings… RW Jakub Voracek has notched 7-15-22 in his last 27 games… D Grant Clitsome has 3-11-14 in 19 games and is riding a five-game point streak (0-5-5) since being held without a point in back-to-back games for the first time (Feb. 11 vs. Colorado and Feb. 13 at Dallas).

The Blue Jackets' sixth Alumni Night of their 10th Season, presented by FOX Sports Ohio, is scheduled for Friday, Mar. 11 when the team hosts the Los Angeles Kings and welcomes back Marc Denis. Acquired from the Colorado Avalanche prior to the 2000-01 season, Denis went 84-146-37 with a 3.01 GAA, .905 SV% and 12 shutouts in 266 games with Columbus from 2000-06. The franchise's all-time leader among goaltenders in games and minutes played, wins and saves, Denis set a then-NHL record for minutes played when he logged 4,511 in 2002-03. His best season was 2003-04 when he went 21-36-12 with a 2.56 GAA, .918 SV% and five shutouts in 66 games. Denis will drop the ceremonial first puck prior to the game and sign autographs for fans after the game's conclusion on the Nationwide Arena concourse. In addition, all fans in attendance will receive a Rick Nash Third-Jersey bobblehead courtesy of FOX Sports Ohio.
