After career highs in goals (11) and points (22) last season, Adam Boqvist had no trouble extending his time with the Blue Jackets. The three-year contract Boqvist signed back in July will double his time in the NHL after two seasons in Chicago and one here in Columbus.
The former No. 8 overall pick still has a lot of time to grow and mature, but the 22-year-old certainly doesn't lack any two-way talent. The offense stands out, as his 11 tallies a season ago tied for sixth in CBJ history for defensemen in a single season.
"He's had an offensive game his whole life," head coach Brad Larsen said earlier this season. "You're learning at this level, especially when you get an elevated role, how hard it is to play those top lines every night. A lot of this will come in the summer, too, with conditioning and strengthening and understanding what it's going to take."
A couple of injuries limited Boqvist to a 52-game season last year, but that didn't stop him from almost doubling his career total in goals. Boqvist netted four his rookie year and two in his sophomore year.
The key for Boqvist when it comes to cementing himself as a key part of the CBJ blue line will be continuing to add to his game, including on the defensive end, where adding strength will allow him to continue to win puck battles at the highest level.
"There's certainly strides there," Larsen said. "We've had plenty of conversations with him as far as what we're looking for from him, and he's trying to do it. He's a real effective player when he's on his game, but I think there's still tons of room for him to improve, which is the exciting part."

Top Moment of 2021-22

Back on Feb. 22, the Jackets found themselves in a tight one against the Maple Leafs. After a late second-period goal from Auston Matthews, the discouraged 5th Line slumped into their seats during the second intermission with their hometown team down 2-1. But after an early third-period penalty from the Leafs, Boqvist regrouped behind the Jackets net, took the puck and weaved his way through the entire length of the ice in five seconds to net the power-play equalizer just 1:05 into the final period. The Blue Jackets went on to win 4-3 in overtime thanks to a Patrik Laine OT goal just 20 seconds into the period.

Stat to Know

In his first season in union blue, Boqvist was impactful right away on special teams. Three power-play goals and three assists with the man advantage makes No. 27 a number that opposing teams will circle when it comes to prepping their penalty kill. On the season, his 100 minutes and 46 seconds of power-play time placed second on the team among CBJ defenseman after Zach Werenski (219:31).

2022-23 Expectations

Boqvist spent the summer at home in Sweden, and after gaining the security of signing the three-year deal in early July, he was able to spend less time worrying about a contract and more time in the gym, where the Blue Jackets have tasked him with adding strength this offseason. With Werenski leading the blue line, there will be a lot of experimenting in the preseason of who will play to his right, and the two paired well at times a year ago. Having a more offensive style, Boqvist should find plenty of opportunity on the power play as well. If he can provide the same offense but add a bit more defensive trust, a breakout season could be afoot.
