COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Jordan Maletta to a three-year entry level contract, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
Maletta, 20, posted 34 goals and 25 assists for 59 points with 55 penalty minutes, a +10 plus/minus rating and 17 multi-point games in 68 outings with the Ontario Hockey League’s Niagara IceDogs this season. His career-high 34 goals led the club and ranked 19th in the OHL. He also set career highs in points and plus/minus, while leading the club in games played (tied), game-winning goals (seven, eighth in OHL) and shorthanded goals (two) and ranking second in power play goals (nine), third in points and fifth in assists. Serving as an alternate captain, Maletta was named the Eastern Conference’s best player on face-offs and finished as the second-most underrated player and third-best penalty killer via the OHL’s annual Coaches Poll.
The St. Catharines, Ontario native has recorded 82-109-191 and 278 penalty minutes in 314 career OHL games over five seasons with the IceDogs and Windsor Spitfires. He set his career high in games played and tied his career high in assists with 24-28-52, 41 penalty minutes and a +7 plus/minus rating in 68 games with the IceDogs in 2014-15.
Maletta has registered 10-5-15 with 12 penalty minutes in 27 career OHL playoff games. He set career highs in goals, assists, points and games played with 6-3-9 and two penalty minutes in 11 games in the 2015 OHL Playoffs. He was originally selected by Windsor with their first selection, 13th overall, in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection draft.
