Blue Jackets Rookie Matt Calvert Named NHL's Third Star of the Week Ending February 27

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets rookie left wing Matt Calvert has been named the NHL's Third Star of the Week for February 21-27, the club and League announced February 28. Toronto Right Wing Phil Kessel was named the First Star, while Chicago Goaltender Corey Crawford was selected the Second Star.

Calvert, 21, tallied 5-1-6, 14 shots and was +2 in three games last week, leading the Blue Jackets to a 2-1-0 mark. He scored a goal, fired off four shots and was even in a 4-0 win over Nashville on Feb. 22. He then became the second rookie in club history (Nikita Filatov) to record a hat trick with 3-1-4, including the game-winning goal, seven shots and a +2 plus/minus rating in a 5-3 win over Phoenix on Feb. 25 as the Jackets overcame a 2-0 deficit. He finished the week with 1-0-1, three shots and was even in a 3-2 loss at Nashville on Feb. 27. He has collected 10-4-14, eight penalty minutes and is +3 in 21 games since being recalled from the AHL’s Springfield Falcons and is riding four-game point and goal streaks (6-2-8).

The Brandon, Manitoba native was the Blue Jackets’ fifth pick, 127th overall, in the 2008 Entry Draft. He collected 47-52-99, 70 penalty minutes and was +47 in 68 games for the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings last season. He led the league in shorthanded goals (9), ranked second in game-winning goals (10), third (tied) in goals and was fourth (tied) in points. He was selected to the WHL Eastern Conference Second All-Star Team. He added 9-7-16 and 15 penalty minutes in 15 playoff games to help Brandon reach the Memorial Cup Final and was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team. He notched 99-131-230, 181 penalty minutes and had a cumulative plus/minus rating of +83 in 198 career games with Brandon, including 10-10-20, 24 penalty minutes and was +13 in 18 career playoff games.

The Blue Jackets return to action Tuesday when they visit the NHL-leading Vancouver Canucks. Game time from Rogers Arena is set for 10 p.m. ET.
