COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have relieved Gerard Gallant of his head coaching duties with the National Hockey League club, President and General Manager Doug MacLean announced Monday. MacLean will meet with the media in the press conference room at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday.
"I am extremely disappointed to announce that Gerard Gallant has been relieved of his head coaching duties with the Columbus Blue Jackets," said MacLean. "He has shown tremendous dedication to our organization over the past six-plus years and worked as hard as he could to help our team be successful. Unfortunately, we have not gotten off to the start we expected this season and while there are always a multitude of factors involved, we felt a change was needed."
Gallant has been a member of the Blue Jackets organization since the inaugural 2000-01 season, serving as an assistant coach until being named interim head coach on January 1, 2004. In 142 games behind the bench, he guided the Blue Jackets to a 56-76-10 record, including a 23-16-2 mark during the second half of the 2005-06 season. Columbus is currently 5-9-1 through 15 games of the 2006-07 campaign.
The Blue Jackets return to action on Wednesday when they host the Predators. Game time is set for 7 p.m. ET with live coverage on FSN Ohio beginning with the IceBreaker pre-game show at 6:30 p.m. Coverage also includes the Blue Jackets Ice Cap post-game show immediately following the game. The game will also be broadcast live on the Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations WBNS-AM Sports Radio 1460 The Fan and WWCD-FM, CD101.
