COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets and Nationwide Arena announced today the introduction of new security procedures for guests attending Blue Jackets games. In an effort to deliver a smooth and thorough patron screening experience, walk-through metal detectors will be utilized at entrances to all National Hockey League arenas effective with the 2015-16 NHL season. Fans attending the Blue Jackets vs. Pittsburgh Penguins preseason-opening game at Nationwide Arena on Monday, September 21 will be the first hockey crowd to experience these new protocols.
“This new policy is in line with what has become an industry standard across MLB, NBA and NFL venues and we’re happy to comply with any enhancement aimed at improving customer convenience and safety,” said Blue Jackets Vice President of Communications & Team Services Todd Sharrock. “The implementation of these procedures will be new for everyone, so we thank our guests in advance for their patience and strongly encourage planning ahead to allow adequate time for entry.”
During events that the walk-through metal detectors will be utilized, guests will be asked to remove keys, phones, mobile devices, wallets/money clips and any other large metal items from their pockets. The machines are similar to those used in airports, however, guests at Nationwide Arena will not need to remove shoes, belts or small amounts of loose change during the initial screening. In the event that an alarm is triggered, a secondary search will be conducted by a certified security staff member. Additionally, an area near each of the entrances will be designated for guests that request or require special accommodations due to medical circumstances or expectant motherhood. The use of metal detectors will replace the handheld wands that have been utilized by Nationwide Arena since 2013.
Guests are also reminded that the policy of searching all permitted bags (no larger than 12x6x12 inches) remains unchanged.
