In recognition of Hockey Is For Everyone month, presented by Vorys, the Columbus Blue Jackets will celebrate inclusion in the sport by hosting a variety of on-ice and off-ice clinics, STEM-focused school field trips and game-day activities intended to demonstrate the platform of hockey and life skills that transcend the sport.
Among the 19 events the Blue Jackets will host over the 28-day month will be five Hockey To Go street hockey clinics at after-school sites; six Power Play Challenge field trips at OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rinks; and two Get Out And Learn! (GOAL) sessions that give kids (ages 5-8) who have never ice skated a chance to try hockey for free. In addition to the above programming that the club executes on a regular basis, the following special events highlight the month's activities:
Monday, Feb. 4 (10-11 a.m.) - Seated floor hockey game at Worthington Christian Village Retirement Community: Long-term care and assisted-living residents will be paired with preschoolers in unique intergenerational hockey activity.
Wednesday, Feb. 13 (time TBD) - Street hockey equipment donation to Worthington Parks & Recreation: Rec center becomes newest CBJ Street Jackets partner and begins six-week Skills & Drills program with its members.
Monday, Feb. 18 (1:30-4 p.m.) - Girls Hockey Day at Nationwide Arena: On-ice clinic for approximately 60-70 girls (ages 6-14) will focus on skill stations and small-area games with instruction from Lisa Chesson, who captured a silver medal as a member of Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and currently plays for the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women's Hockey League.
Saturday, Feb. 23 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.) - Girl Scout Day at Nationwide Arena: Approximately 150 scouts and their siblings will participate in a street hockey clinic and Hockey 101 course before taking the ice for an open skate prior to the Jackets-Sharks game.
