Head coach:Rick Tocchet (First week)
Season Stats:Goals per game: 3.27 (11th) | Scoring defense: 3.96 (31st) | PP: 22.2 percent (15th) | PK: 65.9 percent (32nd)
The narrative:The Canucks were in the news for all the wrong reasons last week, stringing along head coach Bruce Boudreau before eventually firing him Sunday and installing Tocchet as the new leader of the squad. Boudreau turned things around a season ago for the Canucks but they never really got going this season, thanks to a defense that is in consideration as one of the worst in the league. And with captain Bo Horvat in the last year of his contract, some more major changes could be afoot for a team that's made just one playoff appearance the last seven seasons.
2022-23 leaders:Vancouver's biggest issue has been keeping pucks out of the net, but the Canucks are pretty good at putting them into the net. Elias Pettersson leads the way, as the now 24-year-old leads the team in scoring with 56 points on 19 goals and 37 assists. Despite the trade rumors swirling around him, Horvat is tied for seventh in the league with 31 goals among his 50 points, while Andrei Kuzmenko's first NHL season has yielded a 21-22-43 line. Quinn Hughes is the top scoring defenseman at 4-39-43 to place seventh among NHL blueliners in scoring, while Ohio native J.T. Miller has 18 goals.
An injury to starting goalie Thatcher Demko has sidelined him since early December, though he was struggling at the time. Spencer Martin has a team-best 25 starts and is 11-13-1 with a 3.94 GAA and .875 save percentage.
What's new:Tocchet has spent two games behind the bench, earning a 5-2 win in his debut Tuesday over Chicago before Seattle dominated a 6-1 decision Wednesday night. The Canucks are just 3-11-0 in their last 14 and allowing more than four goals per game in that span, which simply isn't a winning formula. Adding Demko to an injured list that already included Tanner Pearson and Tucker Poolman has been a big reason for the struggles.
Trending:Columbus earned a 4-3 OT win over Vancouver on Oct. 18 in Nationwide Arena, giving the Blue Jackets four wins in the last five games of the series.
Former CBJ: None, though bruising winger Dakota Joshua did play at Ohio State and Miller is a native of East Palestine, Ohio.
