COLUMBUS, OH – In keeping with its mission to support the education of local youth and reward those who embrace community service in the spirit of Columbus Blue Jackets’ late team founder John H. McConnell, the Blue Jackets Foundation announced during Saturday’s game that Andrew Price of Grove City is the beneficiary of the $10,000 John H. McConnell Scholarship this year. Price, a senior at Grove City High School, has been accepted to five Ohio colleges and intends to study environmental science and education with the eventual goal of becoming a science teacher.

During his four years at Grove City High School, Price participated in multiple extracurricular activities including student council, choir, French Club and service-oriented groups such as Key Club and Renaissance Club. He was heavily involved in 4-H, where his achievements and leadership led to opportunities to represent his club on multiple county and state boards and national conferences.

In addition to his school and 4-H activities, Price also rose through the Boy Scout ranks to achieve Eagle Scout status upon completion of his project to create an outdoor sanctuary at his church. This self-directed endeavor required him to raise $7,000 and manage 83 volunteers who contributed to the 750 labor hours necessary to complete the job. Price has also been active in his community through Grove City’s Volunteer Involvement Program for teens, volunteering at the Mid-Ohio Foodbank and serving his church.

The John H. McConnell Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 as a partnership between the Blue Jackets players and the team’s charitable foundation as a way to honor the life and legacy of John H. McConnell. Unlike traditional scholarships that are based on academic performance, this fund is intended to reward local high school seniors who demonstrate hard work, perseverance, leadership and community involvement. Each year, an Ohio high school senior who personifies Mr. McConnell’s character and leadership is awarded the $10,000 scholarship.
