COLUMBUS, OHIO – In keeping with its mission to support the education of local youth and advance the development of youth and amateur hockey, the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation announced that Ethan Gates of Athens was awarded this year’s $10,000 High School Hockey Scholarship. Gates, who recently graduated from Athens High School, plans to attend Ohio University with an anticipated major in Public Relations.

Gates, who has been playing hockey since the age of four, played forward and served as captain for the Athens Bobcats of the Athens Youth Hockey Association. He was also named to the Columbus League All-Star Team in both his junior and senior years.

An accomplished student, Gates’ academic standing qualified him to enroll in the post-secondary education program at Ohio University. As a result of taking college prep curriculum as a high school senior, Gates was eligible to play for the OU Intramural hockey team and finished second in points among his college teammates.

In addition to his involvement in National Honor Society and Kiwanis Key Club service organization, Ethan’s athletic interests also included several years of soccer. Outside of school, Gates works at OU’S Bird Arena and serves as a referee for local youth hockey leagues. His volunteerism has included coordination of the Athens Youth Hockey Association’s food and gift drive to give a deserving veteran’s family a memorable Christmas as well as various service projects in the Athens community. One annual project involved providing instruction to third-grade students in a science lab environment during the elementary school’s Waterfest event.
