Both teams came out with pace, and both teams had two goals on the board with 20 minutes were completed. Washington got on the board first when Anthony Mantha tipped Martin Fehervary's shot past Elvis Merzlikins near the midway point, but Columbus answered 41 seconds later when Boone Jenner fed Laine into a one-on-one rush that the CBJ winger wristed past Darcy Kuemper. Chinakhov's power-play wrister from the right circle at 14:58 gave the Jackets a 2-1 lead, but Alex Ovechkin's one-timer on a Caps power play answered things in the dying moments of the first.
Columbus kept the goals coming early in the second when Adam Boqvist fed Sean Kuraly into the zone with speed in the right wing, and Kuraly's wrister got over Kuemper's glove to restore the CBJ lead 3:25 into the frame. But Washington again had the answer at 8:34 when Nic Dowd scored a similar goal, getting behind the defense with speed and beating Merzlikins five-hole from the right side. The Jackets goalie made his best save of the night late in the period when he denied Aliaksei Protas on a rebound to keep it 3-3.
After a scoreless third period, Washington scored just 39 second into overtime when Dylan Strome finished Connor Brown's pass to give the home team the 4-3 win.
