Merzlikins, Bjorkstrand lift Blue Jackets to 1-0 win

Quick Recap

Columbus thought it had scored just 1:23 into the game when Max Domi set up Bjorkstrand across the slot for a shot past goalie Thomas Greiss, but the goal was waved off because the Jackets were offside. It was the rare double review, as officials first looked to see if Detroit had scored previously -- Merzlikins kept a puck from going in on the line -- and then checked the offside review, with Eric Robinson entering the zone just ahead of the play.
Robinson nearly atoned for that but hit the post later in the period, while Jack Roslovic also had a good look on Greiss on the power play as he skated through the entire defense only to be stopped by the Wings netminder. It was all part of a first period in which Columbus put 16 shots on net and had 32 shot attempts.
The Red Wings also had some chances, though, as new acquisition Jakub Vrana was denied early by Merzlikins on a point-blank look while Vladislav Namestnikov hit the post late in the frame.
Detroit continued to hold that momentum into the second period and had 10 of the first 11 shots on goal, but Merzlikins was again equal to the challenge, stopping Vrana on a breakaway on the first shift then later getting over to get the pad on Adam Erne's rebound try. Alexandre Texier also helped the cause when he got his stick on a shot by Namestnikov when it appeared the Wings winger had the entire net open.
Columbus also had some looks with Mikhail Grigorenko and Bjorkstrand each denied on the rush in the second half of the period, while Domi hit the crossbar as well from the right dot.
The Blue Jackets also had two gilded chances early in the third but could not score. Domi was open at the back post on a feed from Dean Kukan but sent it just wide, while Cam Atkinson had a shorthanded breakaway shortly thereafter but was denied by Greiss.
Detroit countered as Vrana was stopped by the pad of Merzlikins after the CBJ goalie spilled a rebound, and Merzlikins also stopped Namestnikov later in the period on a follow-up shot that played the Jackets netminder as much as he played it.
The teams continued an even game but went to overtime from there. In the extra frame, Merzlikins denied Vrana on another breakaway and swallowed up a rebound try from the slot by Michael Rasmussen. The Jackets also got a bit lucky when Filip Zadina missed an open net in the last seconds of OT, leading to a shootout.
There, Laine opened things up with a slick finish through Greiss' legs. Merzlikins denied Vrana and Adam Erne before Bjorkstrand finished things off by beating Greiss clean.

3 Takeaways
  1. Elvis dominates: The funny thing is that on Detroit's second shot on goal of the game, Namestnikov came in along the left wing and almost snuck a puck between the pads of Merzlikins, with the puck sitting on the goal line for a second before the CBJ goalie was able to kick it out. It's fair to say things got better and better as the game went on for the Latvian netminder, as he was really good throughout all 60 minutes of regulation, absolutely fantastic in overtime and then shut the door in the shootout. "I felt comfortable," Merzlikins said postgame. "The first period, maybe I didn't have so many shots. I was a little bit nervous after the first shot went five-hole and I didn't know if it was in or out, but then I just kept playing and trying to have fun." Laine summed up his night succinctly: "We did an all right job in front of him, but he was unreal tonight."
    2. Weird game, but a win: How's this for a stat? Per Natural Stat Trick, Detroit had 3.75 expected goals in all situations in the game, edging out Columbus, which finished at 3.67. That means that based on the shot quantity and quality taken, you'd have expected in an average situation for the teams to compile that much offense. Instead, we had a 0-0 game through 65 minutes, just the fifth scoreless game in franchise history to go to a shootout (three of them have been vs. Detroit). In the end, through a fantastic goaltending duel (and perhaps two teams who weren't bang-on defensively, given their current spots in the playoff picture), the Blue Jackets got what they needed: A win, their first since Jan. 6. "It's just fun winning a game," Bjorkstrand said postgame.
    3. Shootout success: Columbus is 5-10 when a game goes past 60 minutes this year, and that record is one reason the Blue Jackets fell out of the playoff race (those are a lot of free points left on the table, after all). But while the Jackets are 2-7 when a game is decided in OT -- and boy, this was not a great showing in the 3-on-3 -- Columbus has an even 3-3 record in shootouts this year. A lot of that can be placed on the success of Laine and Bjorkstrand in the skills competition, and Laine in particular said he enjoys it. "I don't understand those guys (who don't want to do it)," he said. "It's a great opportunity to get your team closer to the win, and me personally, I always enjoy those moments and I've had some pretty good success so far." Merzlikins, though, had a bit of a different perspective. "I hate (shootouts) in practices but in the games, I have no choice so I have to do them."
