Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Bryan Berard will meet with Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles next week to explore potential surgery to repair a recurring back problem, team President and General Manager Doug MacLean announced today. Berard missed the final 31 games of the 2005-06 season and has not played this season. At this time no date has been set for the potential surgery.
“It is unfortunate that he might have to have another surgery, but we are hoping for a good recovery,” said MacLean. “Right now we are unsure on timetables. The most important thing is to get Bryan healthy.”
Last season, Berard scored 12 goals and 20 assists for 32 points with 32 penalty minutes in 44 games. He set the club record for goals by a defenseman. The Woonsocket, Rhode Island, native has played in 554 career NHL games and totaled 71 goals and 227 assists for 298 points with 444 penalty minutes.
The Blue Jackets return to action Saturday when they travel to take on the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center. Game time is set for 8 p.m. Live coverage on FSN Ohio begins with the IceBreaker, pre-game show at 7:30 p.m. and includes the Blue Jackets Ice Cap post-game show immediately following the game. The game will also be broadcast live on the Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations WBNS-AM Sports Radio 1460 the Fan and WWCD-FM, CD101.
