COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired forward Matt Frattin and a second round pick in the 2014 or 2015 NHL Draft and a conditional third round pick in either 2014 or 2015 from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Marian Gaborik, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. The second round pick was acquired by the Kings from Toronto, while the conditional third round pick originally belonged to Edmonton. Frattin is expected to join the Blue Jackets in Chicago prior to Thursday’s game against the Blackhawks.

Frattin, 26, has tallied two goals and four assists for six points with 11 penalty minutes in 40 games for the Kings this season and has registered 17-17-34 and 40 penalty minutes in 122 career NHL games with the Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2012-13, he collected 7-6-13 and four penalty minutes in 25 games and added 0-2-2 in six playoff games with the Maple Leafs.

The Edmonton, Alberta native was Toronto’s second pick, 99th overall, in the 2007 NHL Draft and spent three seasons with the Maple Leafs organization before being acquired by the Kings in June 2013. Prior to embarking on his professional career, the 6-0, 205-pounder played four seasons at the University of North Dakota from 2007-11. In 153 career NCAA games, he racked up 64-55-119 with 129 penalty minutes and a cumulative +45 plus/minus rating.

Frattin was named to the NCAA West First All-American Team, WCHA First All-Star Team and was the WCHA Player of the Year as a senior in 2010-11 after tallying 36-24-60 and 42 penalty minutes in 44 games. He led the nation in goals, was a Hobey Baker Award finalist and helped UND capture WCHA regular season and playoff titles and advance to the NCAA Frozen Four.

Gaborik, 32, tallied 6-8-14 with six penalty minutes and an even plus/minus rating in 22 games with Columbus in 2013-14, missing 40 contests due to injury. Acquired by Columbus at last year’s trade deadline, he collected 9-13-22, 12 penalty minutes and was +5 in 34 games as a Blue Jacket. In 791 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild, he has registered 342-346-688 and 410 penalty minutes.
