COLUMBUS, OHIO --- The Columbus Blue Jackets will be without right wing Cam Atkinson and center Alexander Wennberg for the next several weeks due to injuries suffered in games last week, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. Wennberg suffered a back injury on December 21 at Pittsburgh, while Atkinson suffered a fractured foot on December 23 vs. Philadelphia. Both players are expected to be sidelined four to six weeks.
Atkinson, who has led the Blue Jackets in scoring in each of the past two seasons, has recorded six goals and seven assists for 13 points with 10 penalty minutes and an "even" plus/minus rating 32 games in 2017-18. A year ago, he made his All-Star Game debut and tallied a career-high 35-27-62, 22 penalty minutes and was +13 in 82 games.
The 28-year-old native of Riverside, Connecticut was selected by Columbus in the sixth round, 157th overall, in the 2008 NHL Draft. He has registered 127-113-240, 112 penalty minutes and a cumulative +9 plus/minus rating in 414 career games with the Blue Jackets
Wennberg, 23, has recorded 4-12-16 with eight penalty minutes and a +7 plus/minus rating in 30 games with the Blue Jackets this season, including 3-3-6 and +3 in the past eight contests. He ranks third-T on the team in plus/minus and fourth in assists.
A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Wennberg has registered 29-106-135 and 53 penalty minutes in 247 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets. He notched career highs with 13-46-59, 21 penalty minutes and was +9 in 80 games in 2016-17, leading the club in assists and multi-point games (14, tied) and finishing second in points. Wennberg was Columbus' first, first round selection, 14th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.
The Blue Jackets return to action on Wednesday when they visit the Penguins. The team will hold a morning skate at PPG Paints Arena at 11:30 a.m. with game time set for 7 p.m. ET.
