Cam here, and first I just want to say thanks for your support as I get my first World Championship started. It's currently about 4:30 p.m. in Helsinki, Finland and we just got done with our first win, beating France 7-2. It was a fun game and we had a lot of energy. I think a lot of the guys were ready to get going, and it's always nice to start things off with a W!
I figure the best way to blog my experience over here is to tell you about my day. So here goes:
Breakfast was at 8 a.m. today, so me and my roommate (Richard Bachman
) got up at 7:45 and headed down to eat. I had my usual breakfast: eggs with ham and turkey, a bowl of strawberry yogurt and slices of bananas...never fails. As soon as all the guys were done, we had a team meeting at 8:30 that focused on what France's tendencies are: penalty kill, power play, 5-on-5. It lasted about 30 minutes, then we headed up to our room until the bus to the rink left at 10.
I played on the third line today with Justin Abdelkader
and Kyle Palmieri
. I thought we played decent overall and had some good opportunities, but we just couldn't find the back of the net. But that will come as we create chemistry as the tournament goes on. The more you play together, the better the line will be.
I thought the leaders stepped up, and the best players were on our team. We played a solid 60 minutes with Jimmy Howard
between the pipes. Obviously mistakes will happen, but that's common and we will take the three points anyway. It was a great game to start the tournament off!
Canada has a very strong team with special players. Tomorrow we will look at tape to see what they like to do and go from there. Energy and adrenaline will be running high, and it should be a great game for everyone to watch.
