And The Winner Is...

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets
Thanks to all fans who voted for the “Jackets Fans” Most Valuable Player Award. The votes have been counted and your pick for the 2011-12 season is right wing Derek Dorsett, who beat out forwards Rick Nash and R.J. Umberger and goaltender Curtis Sanford. Dorsett, 25, tallied 12-8-20 and an NHL-leading 235 penalty minutes in 77 games this season, setting career highs in goals, points and penalty minutes in his fourth NHL season.

The Kindersley, Saskatchewan native tallied four goals in each of the previous three seasons and has seen his point totals improve from five (2008-09) to 14 (2009-10) to 17 (2010-11) to 20 (2011-12) since he made his NHL debut with the club in 2008. Columbus’ ninth pick, 189th overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft, he has registered 24-32-56 and 674 penalty minutes in 256 career games. His 235 penalty minutes this season rank second in franchise history to the 249 penalty minutes accumulated by Jody Shelley during the 2002-03 campaign.
