All-Star Break... Will it defuse or infuse?

by Bill Davidge / Columbus Blue Jackets

January 27

For coaches and broadcasters, a couple of days away will help energize the body for the end of the season push. The mind, the inert energy and especially the voices will return to game like form.

The questions will thus arise, how will it have an effect on the players?

They finished the All-Star push with a six points out of a possible 10on their five-game road trip. They were playing a solid defensive game with outstanding goaltending and timely scoring. Will even a couple of days off help or hinder?

Rick Nash called the Between the Pipes radio show on Sunday morning and did not sound 100-percent. The good thing remains we do not play until Tuesday, and let us hope #61 is healthy.

For the remaining 31 games two things must be part of the winning equation. Solid defensive hockey starting in the net and continuing through all three zones is the primary part of success. Secondary scoring is the second… Nash and Zherdev have been constants in the scoring department and they need a cast of others to help assure solid team performances by adding more red lighters.

How about the skills competition at the All Star game?

It was refreshing to see the new format and with a year under its belt, it will prove to be fun to observe in the future. The graded shootout addition, like the slam dunk competition in basketball will grow in the future with the stars knowing what is now expected.

Chara and a slapshot of 103.1 mph was a highlight, but the enjoyment in the target shooting with Tomas Kaberle showing his skill, that was fun to watch. Rick Nash was relegated to the player-goalie shootout where he was denied.

Visit us on Tuesday January 29th as Gretzky and his Coyotes make their way across the country and set up shop in Columbus!
