What it all means: Coincidence or not, the month of January has been historically gracious to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In eight of the 13 Januarys in franchise history, the Jackets won at least six games in the month. Last January’s 10-win month was a franchise record and propelled Columbus to a 16-9-4 finish over the final two and a half months of the season, securing a playoff berth.
Though seven playoff teams lie ahead in the month, the Jackets played extremely well against an impressive slate of opponents. Columbus outscored these 13 teams 113-83 over 37 games while only getting outscored by four of the opponents – Boston, Montreal, New York Rangers and Colorado – by margins of no more than five goals.
Road trips will keep the club away from Ohio for half of the month and their games will take place in almost every major region of the United States and Canada.
