About The Kitchen Community
The Kitchen Community CEO and co-founder Kimbal Musk is an entrepreneur, restaurateur, and the father of three children who have always had access to a school garden. He's been involved with the school garden movement for over a decade and has seen firsthand the way school gardens can help kids increase their preference for nutritious foods, develop healthier responses to stress, and improve their academic performance. Learning Gardens interrupt a toxic school food system, providing exposure and access to real food at a critical juncture in a child's development. Learning Gardens are outdoor classrooms that teach the value and importance of real food, increasing kids' access to real food AND their preference for it. With this campaign, the Chicago Blackhawks are joining The Kitchen Community in their goal of building a total of 200 Learning Gardens in Chicago Public Schools by April 2019. This effort will impact over 100,000 students daily within the Chicago Public Schools system and their families by extension. Once this goal is realized, it will constitute the largest school garden initiative in the United States, serving nearly half of all schools in CPS.
