Three Stars of the Week: Nov. 12-18

by Brad Boron / Chicago Blackhawks

Each week, the Blackhawks Blog takes you around the AHL, ECHL, NCAA and junior hockey ranks to award three Hawks prospects the Three Stars of the Week.

1st Star: RW Ben Smith / Rockford (AHL)
The Line: 3 Games, 2 Goals, 2 Assists

While the IceHogs had a tough week, earning only one win in three scheduled games, Smith was one of the team's bright spots. The Boston College alum tallied the eventual game-winner in Friday's win over the Houston Aeros, and was a part of each of the IceHogs' goals in their 3-2 loss Sunday. Smith's five goals this season are good for second-most on Rockford, and his 42 shots on goal are behind only Jeremy Morin's 51 for the team lead.

2nd Star: C Alex Broadhurst / London (OHL)
The Line: 3 Games, 1 Goal, 3 Assists, +3 Plus/Minus

The Blackhawks' seventh-round pick in 2011 continues to impress with the London Knights, helping the team to a perfect 3-0-0 week. Broadhurst earned the primary assist on London's overtime game-winning goal on Thursday over Oshawa, then scored the game-tying goal in the Knights' eventual 5-2 victory against Owen Sound. The Orland Park, Ill, native ranks fourth on London with 20 points, and his +12 plus/minus rating is good for third on the team.

3rd Star: D Stephen Johns / Notre Dame (CCHA)
The Line: 2 Games, 3 Assists, +1 Plus/Minus

6-foot-3 blueliner Johns nearly doubled his offensive output for the season as the Irish swept the weekend series against the rival Michigan Wolverines. Johns leads Notre Dame in assists with 7 through 11 games, and is tied for third-most points on his team.

Honorable Mentions: C Vince Hinostroza / Waterloo (USHL) and Chris Calnan / South Shore (EJHL)

Just a week after being named World Junior A Championship MVP and earning gold with the U.S. team, Hinostroza helped lead his Waterloo Black Hawks to a 1-1-0 weekend. The Illinois native recorded a three-point game in Friday's 8-6 loss to Des Moines, then potted the tying goal in Saturday's 3-2 win against Sioux City.

Meanwhile, Calnan put together a five-point week for the EJHL's South Shore Kings, which included a three-point effort on Saturday. The 2012 draft pick leads South Shore with 29 points (15G, 14A) in 20 games in 2012-13.

Around the system:

> Victoriaville's Phillip Danault tallied an assist and was 17-for-25 at the faceoff dot in the Tigres' 3-2 overtime loss to Quebec on Sunday.

> Defenseman Paul Phillips, playing for the University of Denver, recorded two assists and added +2 plus/minus during this weekend's series against Colorado College.

> Rockford's captain, Martin St. Pierre, netted a goal and three assists in the IceHogs' three contests.

> Prospect Maxim Shalunov finished with four points (2G, 2A) to tie for the Team Russia lead as the Subway Super Series ended last week. Blackhawks prospects Danault, Dillon Fournier, and Mark McNeill were held off the scoreboard in their respective contests.
