BLOG: Sikura Ready to Step In if Called | #FifthThirdBetter

Third-year forward looking to build off strong showing in training camp

by Carter Baum @CarterBaum /

As the Blackhawks open Game 1 against the Oilers on Saturday, Dylan Sikura in all likelihood won't be in the lineup. But he's waiting, and ready, should his number be called in the coming weeks.

With a short three-week camp to get ready for playoff hockey, the main forward group in practices has largely stayed at the 12 skaters expected to make up head coach Jeremy Colliton's opening afternoon lines, but Sikura is perhaps the strongest candidate at No. 13.

THE VERDICT: Summer Hockey is Here

There was a time when the NHL went dark during the summer months, but now it's more alive than ever before

by Bob Verdi /

Back in a calmer time, the National Hockey League shut down every summer. We're not talking absolute ancient here, but if you were a dinosaur writing sports and needed to find someone, good luck.

Entire front office staffs scattered for lakefront cottages, fishing holes or swimming pools. Place a call to any franchise headquarters, and you wouldn't even get a switchboard operator. (A certain organization near and dear to our hearts didn't even have one of those during the winter.)

BLOG: Entwistle Takes Big Strides in Rookie Year | #FifthThirdBetter

The 6-foot-3 forward named Rockford's most improved during 2019-20 season

by Carter Baum @CarterBaum /

For MacKenzie Entwistle, the hard work is paying off in his adjustment to the pro game.

The 6-foot-3 forward was named Rockford's Most Improved Player during the 2019-20 campaign, finishing fourth in scoring with 26 points (11G, 15A) in 56 games and second among rookies behind Brandon Hagel. Entwistle's strong season came after a slow start with just one assist in his first five contests and finding the scoresheet in only four of his first 12 games.

BLOG: Special Teams Crucial Against Dual-Threat Oilers

Chicago's Qualifying Round opponent not only had top power play, but second-ranked penalty kill during regular season

by Carter Baum @CarterBaum /

Special teams are key in any game, but for the Blackhawks' Qualifying Round series against the Edmonton Oilers, they could be the difference.

During the truncated 2019-20 season, the Oilers owned the league's best power play unit, operating at a lethal 29.5 percent efficiency -- a full four percentage points higher than the second-place Boston Bruins and the highest conversion rate the NHL's seen since the late 1970s. On the flip side, they also boasted the NHL's second-ranked penalty kill at 84.4 percent.

BLOG: Regula Making Jump from Juniors to NHL Playoffs | #FifthThirdBetter

Acquired in an early-season trade, Alec Regula getting his first taste of Blackhawks organization in playoff atmosphere

by Carter Baum @CarterBaum /

It can be daunting entering your first NHL training camp as a rookie in the Fall. Sure, in most cases you've had either a prospect camp or two to get your feet wet, perhaps a trip to Traverse City and the annual rookie tournament to jumpstart your game before the veterans come in, but nothing can get you ready for the real thing.

Alec Regula, though, had none of that experience to fall back on the past few weeks.

BLOG: Kurashev Shows Improvement in First Pro Season | #FifthThirdBetter

Forward turned corner in rookie year before injury derailed momentum late

by Carter Baum @CarterBaum /

Among the 31-man roster that made the trip to Edmonton for the Blackhawks on Sunday, Philipp Kurashev's inclusion might've flown under the radar. But the Blackhawks know it won't be that way for much longer.

"He's got high-end offensive creativity," Senior Vice President/General Manager Stan Bowman said. "He's got great vision, great skills, quick hands, he can score, he can make plays."
