The Blackhawks and Predators needed more than 60 minutes for the second straight night, with Chicago falling in their first shootout of the season, 2-1.
Ryan Carpenter scored the lone goal for the Blackhawks on the night and Kevin Lankinen made 41 saves in the shootout defeat.

The two teams played an evenly-matched scoreless opening 20 minutes, with each registering five shots on goal and a power play chance.

2nd Period

Nashville controlled most of the second period, taking a 14-10 shot advantage overall with six of Chicago's looks coming over the final four minutes of the frame. Each team enjoyed one full-length power play and one truncated advantage, but neither side could find twine as the two remained deadlocked 0-0 after 40 minutes.

3rd - 5:24 - Nick Cousins (Matt Duchene)

The Predators broke the stalemate early in the third period as Nick Cousins converted a breakaway opportunity off a rush. Following a turnover at the Nashville blue line, Calvin de Haan couldn't corral a bouncing puck in the neutral zone off a Matt Duchene clear and Cousins, with speed, picked it up and went the other way, beating Lankinen with a wrister.

3rd - 9:24 - Ryan Carpenter (Brandon Hagel, David Kampf)

Chicago answered back exactly four minutes later off the stick of Ryan Carpenter. On an offensive-zone entry, David Kampf went cross-ice to Brandon Hagel on the right side, who found Carpenter alone in the slot. The veteran redirected Hagel's feed on goal and quickly cleaned up his own rebound in tight for the equalizer, 1-1.

Shootout

For the second straight night, 60 minutes was not enough between the longtime Central Division foes and after an eventful five minutes of overtime -- which Chicago took in shots, 5-2 -- the game went to a shootout. Matt Duchene scored the lone goal in the skill session as the Predators took the game, 2-1, in a shootout.
