WILKES-BARRE, PA - Jonathan Filewich scored two goals as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (1-1) defeated the Norfolk Admirals (1-1) 5-2 and evened the best-of-seven East Division Semifinals at one game apiece on Saturday night at the Wachovia Arena.
The Admirals spent much of the first period killing penalties. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton got on the board first just 1:28 into the opening frame when Kurtis McLean got a breakaway from the Norfolk blueline and beat Norfolk netminder Corey Crawford on the power play.
The Admirals answered just over a minute later. Adam Burish skated in on Penguins goalie Nolan Schaefer with a half-step shorthanded breakaway. His initial shot was stopped with the rebound laying in the crease. Burish swept the puck into the net with a backhand shot while falling to the ice at 2:40.
Norfolk continued to clog the shooting and passing lanes on several more Wilkes-Barre man advantages throughout the period. However, a shot by Penguins all-star defenseman Micki DuPont deflected off the stick of an Admiral in front for a five-on-three power play goal at 13:57. Norfolk trailed 2-1 after one period of play.
After a scoreless second period, the Penguins stretched their lead to 4-1 with a pair of goals 31 seconds apart. Filewich netted his first goal at 6:11 when he snapped a shot five-hole on Crawford on a two-on-one break. Robert Nilsson found the rebound of a Kyle Brodziak shot and sent it into the net at 6:42.
The Admirals attempted to climb back into the game when Jonas Nordqvist scored on the power play at 10:02. However, the Penguins iced the game with Filewich's second tally on the power play at 18:52.
Crawford (30 shots, 25 saves) got the loss. Schaefer (31 shots, 29 saves) picked up the win.
Norfolk was 1-6 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 3-9.
