New Blackhawks defenseman Chris Campoli spoke to the media via conference call Monday afternoon. Below are excerpts from the call.
On becoming a member of the Blackhawks:
"I’m extremely excited to join the team. I think there are so many positives in this situation for me. I’m a puck moving, up ice-often defenseman. Skating is a big part of my game. I know from playing against Chicago they’re a team that is a puck possessive, aggressive, up-tempo style of team, and I really think there’s a fit there."
On his skill set and expectations:
"I’m capable of penalty killing. I have been in my career; I’ve gotten more of an opportunity this year to play in that role in Ottawa than in the past. Speaking with Stan, he mentioned that he saw me as a defenseman that could contribute in all situations, so in him saying that, I know he expects me to be able to come in and be able to help. My style of penalty killing, well, I’m a defenseman who’s quick, and I like to put pressure, but depending, of course, on the system in Chicago and the way the coaches want to do things, I will have to adjust my game accordingly."
On being part of a team with playoff potential:
"It’s very, very exciting for me. In the past, I’ve played on some teams that have struggled in my career. And now, I was telling someone, I can have a realistic conversation about the Stanley Cup. I’m really excited about that. The expectations to win, there’s so much passion in this city for the Blackhawks, and I’m excited to be coming over there and be a part of that. It’s a challenge as a player to have – when you have that expectation day in and day out to win games and ultimately a championship, to be ready and prepare yourself – and contributing to that is my goal."
On the Blackhawks' playoff push:
"I know they’re a great team. They’re right in the thick of things in the West. What I like about the situation is that they’re an upbeat, up-tempo, high energy. They’re for the most part a young group, or the core of the team is a young group. I’m really excited to be a part of that. I’m not all that old yet in my career, so that’s a good fit for me."
