BLOG: Mitchell returns to Denver for junior year

The defenseman was taken in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft

Blackhawks prospect Ian Mitchell will return to the Denver Pioneers for the 2019-20 season, the school announced on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old defenseman has eight goals and 49 assists over 80 games with the University of Denver and is coming off a 2018-19 sophomore campaign that saw him lead all of Denver's defense in points with 27 (6G, 21A) through 39 games.

The blueliner led all Pioneer players with 12 power-play points and 66 blocked shots. He was named Second-Team All-NCHC.

Denver made it all the way to the semifinal of the NCAA's tournament before falling 4-3 to Massachusetts in overtime.

Mitchell was selected by Chicago 57th overall in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft.
