BLOG: Blackhawks to Learn Fate of First-Round Pick in 2022 Draft Lottery

The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery is set for Tuesday night, where the Blackhawks will learn the fate of their first-round pick in this year's draft.
After sending a lottery-protected 2022 first-round pick to Columbus as part of last summer's acquisition of Seth Jones, if Chicago does not win one of the two rounds of Tuesday's draft lottery, their first-round pick in this year's draft would officially be transferred to the Blue Jackets.
If Chicago were to win either the first- or second-overall pick via the draft lottery, they would retain their pick for early July's NHL Draft and instead would transfer next year's first-round pick to Columbus.

Finishing the season sixth-worst in the league standings, the Blackhawks enter the lottery with the six-best odds at the No. 1 overall pick -- a 7.5% chance entering the first lottery draw. Based on who wins the first draw, Chicago's chances at the No. 2 overall pick would increase on a proportionate basis in the second lottery draw.
The maximum a team can advance in the draft order is 10 picks, meaning only the top 11 teams in the current draft order are eligible for the No. 1 overall pick.
Through various iterations of draft lottery rules, the Blackhawks have won the lottery in some form or fashion on three occasions -- in 1999 advancing to No. 4 overall, in 2007 to No. 1 overall and in 2019 to No. 3 overall. The latter two selections were used to select Patrick Kane and Kirby Dach, respectively. In 1999, Chicago traded its advanced pick for defenseman Bryan McCabe and Vancouver's first-round selection the following year.
The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery will take place on Tuesday, May 10, at 5:30 p.m. CT from the NHL Network studio in Secaucus, N.J. The event will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+ in the U.S.
Chicago's conditional first-round pick acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline for Marc-Andre Fleury is not part of the NHL Draft Lottery process since the Wild are still playing. If Minnesota advances past the second round of the playoffs and Fleury is the netminder of record in four of their wins, the Blackhawks would be awarded the Wild's first-round selection, ranging anywhere from No. 28 to No. 32 overall. If neither condition is met, Chicago would be awarded Minnesota's second-round pick in the upcoming draft.
