Blackhawks Sign Prospect Hjalmarsson

Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the Blackhawks have signed defensemen Niklas Hjalmarsson to a 3-year entry level contract.

Hjalmarsson, 19, 6'3". 196 pound defensemen was selected by the Blackhawks'in the 4th round, 108th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. This season, Hjalmarsson played for the HV 71's in Sweden's Elite League appearing in 37 games scoring two goals and 24 penalty minutes while also appearing in 13 playoff games, notching one goal and one assist.

Hjalmarsson also represented Sweden at the 2007 World Junior Championships appearing in seven games and recording two goals and one assist for three points and four penalty minutes. Sweden finished 4th at the 2007 World Junior Championships.

A native of Eksjo, Sweden, Hjalmarsson spent the last three seasons (2004-05 to 2006-07) playing in HV 71's system.
