The Chicago Blackhawks and AHAI would like to congratulate the 2012 State Champions.
The United Center was alive on March 23rd even though there wasn’t a Blackhawks game. The High School State Championships for the Red Division, Combined Division and the Girls Division were played on United Center ice to the largest crowd for a championship game in the 25 year history of the State Championships.
In the first game of the night, the New Trier Trevian’s Girls team beat out Lake Forest Scouts Girls in a very tight 1-0 game that came down to the wire. Morgan Crane netted the game’s only goal midway through the second to take the lead, and that’s all that the Trevians would need. Congratulations New Trier!
Final score: New Trier 1 - Lake Forest 0
In the Boys Red Division Championship, St. Rita Mustangs shutout the St. Viator Lions 5-0. The game was broadcast live in HD on Comcast SportsNet and attended by the largest crowd ever for a championship game at the United Center. After finishing the season 3rd overall in the state rankings, St. Rita proved they were a force to be reckoned with winning their second title in three seasons. The Mustangs were lead by Stan Sojka, who scored 2 goals in the final game. Congratulations to the St. Rita Mustangs!
Final Score: St. Rita 5 - St. Viator 0
In the first ever Boys Combined Championship held at the United Center, Glenbard beat out Bartlett/Wheaton West in a very hard fought game that wouldn’t be decided in regulation. It took just a few minutes into the overtime session before Glenbard forward Nick Riscossa netted the game winner to take the state title 2-1. It was truly a Cinderella story for Glenbard and a miracle run. Congratulations Glenbard Hockey Club!
Final Score: Glenbard 2 - Bartlett 1
