The Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago’s WGN Channel 9 announced today that they have agreed on a five-year broadcast rightsholder extension. The agreement will keep Blackhawks hockey on “Chicago’s Very Own” through the conclusion of the 2015-16 NHL season.
WGN Channel 9 has been one of the flagships for Blackhawks television broadcasts since the start of the 2008-09 campaign. The partnership united two historic Chicago institutions that have been part of the city’s fabric for over 60 years.
“The Chicago Blackhawks are very proud of our association with WGN-TV,” said Blackhawks President John McDonough. “They represent the finest local sports programming in America and this extension is another step forward for our franchise.”
Since beginning broadcasts on WGN-TV in 2008, featuring Emmy-winning broadcasters Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk, ratings for Blackhawks games on the station have increased more than 85%.
"We're proud to continue this great partnership with the Blackhawks on WGN-TV, where Chicago's Very Own plays," said Marty Wilke, VP/General Manager of WGN-TV/CLTV. "Our viewers will get more of what they want and it's clear they love their Chicago Blackhawks."
The Blackhawks will return to the United Center on Wednesday, February 16 to open a three-game homestand by hosting the Minnesota Wild at 7:00 P.M. Chicago’s next broadcast on WGN Channel 9 will be on Monday, February 21 when they visit the St. Louis Blues at 1:00 P.M.
