The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have acquired forward Andrew Desjardins (deh-ZHAHR-den) from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Ben Smith and a conditional seventh-round selection in the 2017 National Hockey League Draft.
Desjardins, 28, registered eight points (5G, 3A) in 56 games with San Jose this season. The Lively, Ontario, native ranked third on the Sharks with 96 hits; he paced the team with six fighting majors and ranked second with 50 penalty minutes. Desjardins has 48 points (15G, 33A) and 248 PIM in 272 career NHL games across five seasons with San Jose, in addition to four points (2G, 2A) in 26 career Stanley Cup Playoff contests.
Smith, 26, tallied 39 points (23G, 16A) over 156 career games with the Blackhawks. He notched nine points (5G, 4A) in 61 games with Chicago this season. The Winston Salem, N.C., native was selected in the sixth round (169th overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft.
