Admirals Drop Penalty-Filled Contest

HARTFORD, CT - The Norfolk Admirals (39-15-4-1) fell to the Hartford Wolf Pack (33-20-3-0) 5-1 in a penalty-filled game on Saturday night at the Hartford Civic Center Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Wolf Pack jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Dane Byers scored on a shot from below the left faceoff circle at 4:50. Lauri Korpikoski then tallied with a slapshot from the right point at 9:07 of the first.

The Admirals cut Hartford's lead in half midway through the second period. Craig MacDonald sent a backhand pass from the slot to Carl Corazzini at the left faceoff circle. Corazzini beat Wolf Pack netminder Al Montoya at 11:12.

However, Hartford built their lead to 4-1 after forty minutes of play. Nigel Dawes scored a power play goal at 16:18. Following the Dawes goal, netminders Montoya and Crawford were both assessed fighting majors and game misconducts, as Hartford's Alex Westlund and Norfolk's Mike Brodeur assumed the goaltending duties for the remainder of the game. Hugh Jessiman scored the Wolf Pack's fourth goal at 18:32 of the second stanza.

Hartford got the only goal in a penalty-marred third period, as Jarkko Immonen tallied a power play marker at 9:56.

Crawford (23 shots, 22 saves) got the loss for the Admirals and Mike Brodeur (11 shots, 9 saves) did not receive a decision. Al Montoya (12 shots, 11 saves) got the win for the Wolf Pack and Alex Westlund (16 shots, 16 saves) did not receive a decision.

Norfolk was 0-7 on the power play while Hartford was 2-4.The teams combined for 196 penalty minutes in the contest. Norfolk received 105 penalty minutes while Hartford accumulated 91 penalty minutes.

The Admirals travel to Worcester tomorrow to face the Sharks at 7:00 p.m.
