1st Star: G Mac Carruth
, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)The Line:
2GP, 2-0-0, including his sixth shutout, setting a single-season franchise record
Carruth’s 26-save shutout on Feb. 2 vs. Spokane was his league-leading sixth of the season, breaking yet another Portland goaltending mark. The 2010 seventh-round draft pick currently boasts a 23-3-2 record, a 1.83 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage (tied for best in the WHL), and has yet to lose more than one game in regulation in each month of play this season.2nd Star:
C Teuvo Teravainen
, Jokerit (SM-liiga)The Line:
Teravainen, the Blackhawks’ first-round draft pick last summer, has picked up his offensive production, lighting the lamp three times in three games last week. Two of them came in a 3-1 win over SaiPaa on Jan. 29, when he netted a pair of third-period goals to break a 1-1 tie.
G Kent Simpson, Toledo Walleye (ECHL)The Line:
3GP, 3-0-0, 1SO
Three games in three nights is usually a good opportunity for both goaltenders to see some action, but Toledo went with rookie netminder Simpson in all three outings this past weekend. It’s not hard to see why, either, as he started out with a 20-save shutout of Cincinnati, the first blanking of his professional career, and allowed just one goal in each of the next two nights.
Honorable Mentions: LW Garret Ross, Saginaw (OHL); C Mark McNeill, Prince Albert (WHL)
Two captains in the Canadian major-juniors made the honor roll this week. Saginaw left wing Garret Ross continued his recent hot streak, registering five points and +2 plus/minus rating over two games last week, including a three-point effort (2G, 1A) in 5-4 loss to Sault Ste. Marie.
Meanwhile, Mark McNeill logged two goals and an assist for Prince Albert last week, including a dramatic game-tying goal against Victoria on Jan. 29 with one second left in regulation. The Raiders would win that game 6-5 in a shootout.
Around the system:
- It was a good week for goalies in the system: Matt Tomkins was a rock for Sherwood Park, starting three games and winning two, making 99 saves on 104 shots in that span. Tomkins has not recorded a loss since Jan. 11... Brandon Whitney also had a fine week in net, winning both of his starts for Victoriaville in the QMJHL... New acquisition Henrik Karlsson made his first start for the Rockford IceHogs, making 18 saves on 19 shots in a 1-0 loss at San Antonio.
- Although Rockford has lost their last six contests, defensemen Adam Clendening continued his strong rookie campaign by logging two helpers in his last two games.
- Joe Gleason contributed to North Dakota’s weekend homestand against Wisconsin, assisting on the team’s only goal in a 1-1 tie on Feb. 1 before scoring his fourth goal of the season in 4-1 win the next night.
