3 Stars of the Week: Jan. 12-18, 2015

1st Star: LW Garret Ross, Rockford IceHogs (AHL)
The Line: 3GP, 1G, 2A

Ross moved into second in team scoring with three points in three games last week, picking up one point in each contest. He compiled an assist on Tuesday in a 3-2 shootout loss to Charlotte, scored a power-play goal on Friday in the IceHogs’ 4-0 blanking of the Iowa Wild and capped off the weekend with an assist in Rockford’s 3-2 win over Chicago on Saturday. Ross currently leads the team with 13 goals and a +20 plus/minus rating in 35 games.

2nd Star: C Tyler Motte, University of Michigan (BIG10)
The Line: 1GP, 2G, 1A

Motte had a big showing for the Wolverines in their only outing of the week, a 10-6 road win over Ohio State on Friday. The 2013 fourth-round pick netted a power-play goal in the first period and added the game-winner in the middle frame; he also assisted on an empty-netter to seal the result. Motte now ranks third on the team with 21 points (7G, 14A) in 18 games this season.

3rd Star: D Michael Paliotta, University of Vermont (H-EAST)
The Line: 2GP, 1G, 2A

Paliotta posted points in both of Vermont’s games last weekend, continuing his impressive senior campaign. The 2011 third-round pick scored the Catamounts’ lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Northeastern on Friday, then picked up a pair of helpers the next night in a 2-2 tie. The Vermont captain paces his team with 15 assists and 21 points in 23 games this season.

Honorable mentions: RW Ryan Hartman, Rockford (AHL); C John Hayden, Yale University (ECAC)

Hartman got on the scoreboard twice in three games for Rockford last week; he tallied the game-tying goal against Charlotte on Tuesday to send the game to overtime, where the IceHogs lost in a shootout. On Sunday, the 2013 first-round pick opened the scoring for Rockford in a 3-2 shootout victory over Chicago.

Hayden helped Yale complete a weekend sweep of Brown University, as the Bulldogs won 1-0 on Friday and 5-1 the next night; the 2013 third-round pick assisted on the opening goal in Saturday’s tilt and later tallied the game-winning goal. Hayden continues to lead Yale with 12 points (4G, 8A) in 14 games this season.

Around the system:

  • Robin Norell scored his second goal of the season, and his first game-winning tally, in Djurgarden’s 5-2 win over HV71 on Friday; the 2013 fourth-round pick now has seven points in 33 games this season, second-most among team blueliners.

  • Vincent Hinostroza contributed two assists in Notre Dame’s 6-1 victory at Connecticut on Sunday. He currently leads the Fighting Irish with 16 helpers and ranks third with 19 points this season... Nick Schmaltz picked up an assist in North Dakota’s 7-1 win over Niagara on Friday and now has 17 points (3G, 14A) in 19 games during his freshman campaign... North Dakota sophomore Luke Johnson tallied his seventh assist and 11th point of the season in a 5-0 win over Niagara the next night.

  • Phillip Danault scored his sixth goal of the campaign on Tuesday against Charlotte, matching his AHL career-high, and added his 17th assist on Saturday against the Wolves... Brandon Mashinter recorded the game-winning goal in Friday’s win over Iowa and added an assist for his fifth multi-point outing of the season... Dennis Rasmussen tallied a goal and an assist in three contests for Rockford last week.

  • Defensive partners T.J. Brennan and Ville Pokka each notched a pair of assists in three games for Rockford last week; Brennan continues to lead the team with 31 points (8G, 23A) in 41 games this season... Goaltender Scott Darling posted his first shutout of the season with a 30-save effort against the Iowa Wild in his only appearance of the week. The 26-year-old improved to 10-5-2-0 this season, with a 2.17 goals-against average and .929 save percentage.
