The 2008 World Junior Championship kicks off on Wednesday morning in the Czech Republic, with Team USA facing off against Kazakhstan and Team Sweden doing battle with Slovakia.
Colorado Avalanche prospects Mike Carman and Kevin Montgomery were selected to the U.S. National Junior Team, while Johan Alcen will suit up for Team Sweden.
The World Juniors, also known as the World Under-20 Championship, annually hosts the best under-20 hockey players in the world. This year’s tournament will take place in Pardubice and Liberec, Czech Republic, from Dec. 26-Jan. 5.

Colorado’s fourth selection (third round, 81st overall) in the 2006 Entry Draft, Carman will be making his second appearance with the U.S. National Junior Team. The Augusta, Ga., native played in all seven games for the bronze medal-winning U.S. team at the 2007 World Junior Championship, recording one goal.
Carman, who is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota, did not play for the Gophers during the first semester after being ruled academically ineligible. The 19-year-old forward will resume playing with the Gophers at the conclusion of the World Juniors. Carman recorded 20 points (9g/11a) in 41 games as a freshman at Minnesota in 2006-07.
Montgomery is currently playing for London of the Ontario Hockey League, where he leads all Knights defensemen in scoring with 26 points (6g/20a) in 34 games. Colorado’s fifth selection (fourth round, 110th overall) in the 2006 Entry Draft, Montgomery began the 2006-07 season with Ohio State University (CCHA) before joining London on Dec. 11, 2006. The Rochester, N.Y., native will be making his first appearance with the U.S. National Junior Team.
Alcen, who was Colorado’s ninth selection (seventh round, 195th overall) in the 2007 Entry Draft, has recorded two goals and eight assists in 19 games with Brynas IF.
