Stat Of The Week

Peter Budaj’s win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night gave him 99 career victories, one shy of
100. He is looking to become just the third goaltender in franchise history to reach the century mark in wins, behind Patrick Roy (262) and Dan Bouchard (107).

Avalanche All-Access

This week on Avalanche All Access, hosts Kyle Keefe and Julie Browman are hanging out with the Freedom Service Dogs, who assist disabled citizens and wounded veterans. The dogs show Kyle and Julie some of their best tricks as they prepare to assist people in need. Also, Mike Haynes talks with head coach Joe Sacco, who discusses the recent trade activity. Plus, we debut our first installment of “The Stastny’s,” as movie buff Paul Stastny makes his Oscar picks in anticipation of the upcoming Academy Awards.

After getting back into the win column Tuesday night against St. Louis, the Avs look to carry that momentum through their final three February games and beyond. After hosting Edmonton on Wednesday night, Colorado opens a three-game road swing Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.

On Wednesday night the Avalanche will host the Oilers in what will be Colorado’s fifth and final home game of February. It will be the third meeting between the teams this season, with both of the first two contests coming at Rexall Place. Edmonton earned a 3-2 victory on Nov. 25, while Colorado outlasted the Oilers in a shootout, 4-3, on Dec. 30.

The Avs then open a three-game road trip with back-to-back contests against Los Angeles and Anaheim over the weekend. The Avalanche and Kings will square off Saturday afternoon, while Colorado will visit Anaheim on Sunday evening.

Los Angeles has defeated Colorado twice this season – winning by a 6-4 count on Oct. 23 and a 5-0 score on Dec. 21 – with both games coming at Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche and Ducks have met once previously, with Anaheim taking a 3-0 decision earlier this month on Feb. 5.

Colorado will wrap up the week by playing another Pacific Division opponent, the San Jose Sharks, on Tuesday night at HP Pavilion. These two teams just met on Feb. 19, when Devin Setoguchi led San Jose to a 4-0 win behind his first career hat trick. The teams met twice earlier in the season, with the Sharks claiming a 4-2 win on Oct. 21 and the Avs coming back with a 4-3 overtime victory on Nov. 17.

The National Hockey League’s trade deadline is set for 1:00 p.m. MT on Monday, Feb. 28, and the wheeling and dealing across the league has already been coming at a fast pace.

The Avalanche has made two big moves in anticipation of the deadline, picking up goaltender Brian Elliott from the Ottawa Senators and then adding defenseman Erik Johnson, forward Jay McClement and a first-round draft pick from the St. Louis Blues.

It’s anyone’s guess as to how the deadline will play out – both in Denver and across the NHL – but the date has been circled on the calendars of hockey fans for months.

Colorado previously completed a number of trades earlier this season, which included the additions of Ryan O’Byrne from the Montreal Canadiens, Matt Hunwick from the Boston Bruins and Tomas Fleischmann from the Washington Capitals.
