by Ryan Boulding / Colorado Avalanche

Team USA continued to climb the Group B standings on Friday, topping Hungary 5-1 at the Yubileiny Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Americans got on the board in the second period, registering one power-play tally and two even-strength markers to take an overwhelming 3-0 lead. They also played a stifling defensive game, holding Hungary to just four shots on goal through the first 40 minutes of action.

Another two goals in the third period capped off the win for the United States, though the Hungarians did find twine themselves to beat the shutout bid with 2:01 remaining in the match.

U.S. forward JT Compher didn’t find himself on the scoresheet Friday, but he did finish the contest 6-for-11 (54.55 percent) in the faceoff circle with 14:18 of ice time.

Team USA (3-0-0-2) moved into third place in Group B with the victory. The Americans take on Germany (1-0-1-2) on Sunday.
