by Staff Writer / Colorado Avalanche

The Arizona Sundogs and New Mexico Scorpions squared off in a decisive Game 7, Arizona's second Game 7 of the 2006-07 CHL Playoffs, Tuesday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. The Sundogs fell short fighting back from a 3-0 deficit and lost 3-2. The Scorpions move on to face the Laredo Bucks in the Southern Conference Finals.

The New Mexico Scorpions opened the game's scoring just 12 seconds into the contest as Christopher Robertson snuck behind the Sundogs defense and slid the puck past Arizona netminder Mike Wall to give his club an early 1-0 lead. Mike Falk and Aaron MacInnis assisted on the early goal. With 2:56 to play in the first the Scorpions took a two-goal lead as Craig Macdonald pushed home a loose rebound in front of a crowded Arizona net with Konrad Reeder and Mike Prpich collecting assists on the play.

In the second the Sundogs' Brent Kelly snapped his stick skating out of the defensive zone, leaving Prpich to skate in alone on Wall. Prpich slid the puck through Wall's legs to give his club a 3-0 lead. The shorthanded tally was Prpich's league-leading 13th of the post-season. With 40 seconds to play in the middle period and again on the power play, the Sundogs tallied their first of the night. Ryan Steeves shoved a rebound into the net on passes from Max Gordichuk and Cory Stillman to cut the New Mexico lead to 3-1 through two periods of play.

In the third, the Sundogs' Brent Kelly scored just 48 seconds into the frame on a delayed penalty call making the score 3-2. Dan Laperriere and Stillman notched assists.

Mike Wall appeared in net for Arizona stopping 28 of 31 shots in the loss while Scott Reid blocked 44 of 46 shots in the series win. The Sundogs finished 1-for-4 on the power play while New Mexico was unable to convert on two chances with the man advantage. Arizona outshot New Mexico 46-31 in the contest.
