Former University of Denver teammates and high school classmates Paul Stastny and Matt Carle faced each other as NHL opponents for the first time in their young careers when the Avalanche hosted the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night at Pepsi Center.
Carle, a rookie defenseman for the Sharks, and Stastny, a rookie center for the Avalanche, helped the Pioneers capture the 2005 NCAA Championship. The former Pioneers tied for the overall team scoring lead at DU last season, but Stastny edged Carle in the WCHA scoring race.
Both players currently sit among the top rookie scorers in the NHL, with Carle ranking third among rookies with 14 points and Stastny fourth with 13.
Neither player contributed points Wednesday. Stastny logged 13 minutes, 23 seconds of ice time during the game with four shots and two penalty minutes. Carle finished the game with 22 minutes, 43 seconds of ice time and one shot.
Stastny and Carle will next face each other on December 7 when the Avalanche travel to San Jose.
