Colorado Avalanche prospect Kevin Shattenkirk has been selected to the U.S. National Junior Team, USA Hockey announced today. He will represent Team USA at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship held Dec. 26 - Jan. 5 in Ottawa, Ontario.
The World Juniors, also known as the World Under-20 Championship, annually hosts the best under-20 hockey players in the world.
Colorado’s first-round pick (14th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Shattenkirk is currently a sophomore at Boston University (Hockey East). The 19-year-old defenseman has appeared in all 13 games for the Terriers this season, notching 10 points (3g/7a). He leads all BU defensemen in goals and ranks second in points.
A native of Greenwich, Conn., Shattenkirk will be making his first appearance at the World Juniors. He did captain the U.S. National Under-18 Team in 2006-07, helping Team USA win the silver medal at the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Finland.
