The new season is right around the corner and ColoradoAvalanche.com will be profiling several Avs prospects as they prepare for the 2015-16 campaign.
Next up is Mikko Rantanen, who took the time to sit down and chat during the Avalanche's development camp in July. Selected No. 10 overall by Colorado in this past summer's NHL Draft, Rantanen spent last season playing professional and junior hockey in Finland with TPS and will look to make an impression during Avs training camp.
Q: What’s your favorite hockey memory?
A: Last spring with the TPS U-18 team, we won the championship in Finland. That has been the only time that I have won something in hockey.
Q: Who was your favorite hockey player growing up?
A: Growing up it was (Peter) Forsberg. That’s pretty weird because he is Swedish, and I’m Finnish. I liked to watch him play when he played. He is a great player, but last year it was Sidney Crosby. I like to watch him play, and he is a great player too.
Q: Who do you try to model your game after?
A: I think Corey Perry or Ryan Getzlaf. Those are big guys too, and they’re both good at protecting the puck. They’re good at making plays, especially Perry who is good at scoring goals so I try to learn from them.
Q: What hobbies do you like to do when you're away from the rink?
A: Actually this summer in Finland, we played Frisbee golf a lot. That’s one hobby I like to do with my friends.
Q: Are you pretty good at Frisbee golf?
A: Not yet, but hopefully I will be soon.
Q: What’s your favorite pregame meal?
A: Probably chicken pasta, made by my mom. That’s my favorite.
Q: Do you have a pregame routine?
A: I do the same warmup every game but not a special one.
Q: Do you have any siblings?
A: Yeah, I have two sisters.
Q: Do they play sports?
A: They both play Floorball. It’s not very known here in the U.S. It’s a little bit like hockey, but there’s no hitting and it’s with a ball.
Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: Probably Taken. That’s one I’ve always liked.
Q: What is your favorite TV show?
A: I like Prison Break.
Q: What career would you pursue if it wasn't hockey?
A: I would try and play soccer or tennis. I like to watch those, and I would try and go professional in either of those two sports if I wasn’t pursuing hockey.
