The new season is right around the corner and ColoradoAvalanche.com will be profiling several Avs prospects as they prepare for the 2015-16 campaign.
Next up is Kyle Wood, who took the time to sit down and chat during the Avalanche's development camp in July. Selected in the third round (No. 84 overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft, the 6-foot-5 rear guard is entering his fourth season in the OHL and will look to use his size to his advantage at training camp next week.
Q: What’s your favorite hockey memory?
A: Getting drafted by Colorado last year was a pretty cool experience. Going through the draft and seeing the first round and seeing what is going on there, that’s definitely been my favorite so far in my career.
Q: What’s your favorite hockey moment?
A: I don’t score big goals; so probably scoring goals is my favorite moment. When overtime comes, I’m trying to look to score and that is a great feeling when it happens.
Q: Who’s your favorite hockey player?
A: I usually look up to Shea Weber or someone like Drew Doughty, but Doughty is a little smaller than me. It’s just kind of how they play both sides of the game so well. I try to match my game to theirs.
Q: What’s your standard pregame meal?
A: Usually just some pasta and some rice and vegetables. I’m a pretty normal guy. I don’t eat too much before the game.
Q: Do you have a pregame routine?
A: Not really, I just kind of play with the guys and stay loose and play some soccer and stuff like that. We usually have a team meeting, and then I’ll tape my sticks and then I’ll go out on the ice and throw some pucks around. That’s pretty much it.
Q: If you could play another professional sport, what would it be?
A: Definitely baseball. I grew up playing baseball, and it would be great just to see what they do and with the money they make. It’d be pretty cool to play that many games and live that lifestyle.
Q: What do you like to do away from the rink?
A: Just kind of hang around with my friends. I’m an active guy, so I like to play some baseball and football in my spare time. I’ll work out like everybody else here, just trying to get better, and I’m on the ice a lot. That is pretty much what I do in the summer.
Q: Do you have any siblings?
A: I have a younger brother.
Q: Does he play hockey?
Yeah, he is in Triple-A right now. I think he is in Major Bantam right now, so it’s close to his draft year I guess.
Q: When did your passion for hockey begin?
A: I started skating when I was about four. My dad always liked hockey and it was always Saturday nights, which is Hockey Night in Canada. I grew up loving it, and when I started playing it I was good at it. So that helped me develop my passion for it.
