Practice Report 9/28/07

by Aaron Lopez / Colorado Avalanche

Theodore on the Mend:

On Friday, Jose Theodore took part in a full practice for the second consecutive day after sitting out the beginning of training camp following minor knee surgery on Aug. 29.

Theodore again handled a big workload in practice on Friday morning and looks to be making headway, although his status for the start of the regular season is still uncertain.

Avalanche Head Coach Joel Quenneville stated that while he has been pleased with Theodore’s progress, the netminder will not play in Colorado’s final exhibition contest on Saturday.

“I think he’s made a steady progression this week,” said Quenneville. “He said he felt good this morning coming in, which is important.”

Closing out the Preseason:

The Avalanche (3-0-2) will close out its exhibition schedule on Saturday against the Phoenix Coyotes (3-1-3) at Pepsi Center, which marks the second meeting between the teams this preseason.

Colorado opened its exhibition slate with a 4-3 overtime victory over Phoenix on Sept. 17 in Glendale, Ariz. In that game, Paul Stastny scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Avs to victory.

For Openers:
The Colorado Avalanche has certainly had its share of success in season openers. In fact, the Avalanche holds the top winning percentage among NHL clubs in season openers, having posted a 15-5-7 record (.685%).

In season openers played at home, the Avalanche have posted a 7-2-3 mark (.708%), good for fourth in the league.

Avalanche captain Joe Sakic has been particularly productive in the season’s first game throughout his storied career. Sakic is second among active players with 11 goals in season openers (Brendan Shanahan, 12). In addition, the center ranks fourth on the all-time season opener career points list with 26 (11g/15a) and stands second among active players. Only Ray Bourque (30), Jaromir Jagr (28) and Wayne Gretzky (27) currently sit ahead of Sakic.

Lake Erie Monsters Win Preseason Opener:
In the team's AHL franchise debut on Thursday night, the Lake Erie Monsters scored four unanswered goals and dropped the Milwaukee Admirals by a 4-2 count.

David Jones, J.D. Corbin, Mark McCutcheon and Rob Drummond scored goals for the Monsters, while Michael Wall earned the victory in goal by stopping 30-of-32 shots.

The Monsters will finish their exhibition slate on Friday night against the Chicago Wolves.

Lake Erie will open its regular season schedule on Oct. 6 at home against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
