Numbers Game: 2009 Draft Choices

by Aaron Lopez / Colorado Avalanche
If you missed the Avalanche’s 2009 development camp and are looking to catch a glimpse of some of the club’s top young prospects, rookie camp is the place to be.

Five of the Avalanche’s seven choices from the 2009 NHL Entry Draft will be in attendance at rookie camp, including No. 3 overall selection Matt Duchene.

Below, you’ll find the numbers that Colorado’s youngest prospects will be wearing during their first rookie camp.

“Last Worn By” denotes the last Avalanche/Nordiques player to wear the number during an NHL contest.

#9 – Matt Duchene
The Avalanche’s highest draft selection since moving to Denver, Duchene wore No. 59 at development camp but will slip on a No. 9 jersey when rookie camp opens. The 18-year-old’s rookie camp number will be the same one he wore with the OHL’s Brampton Battalion last season. Some other notables who have occupied No. 9 for the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise include Real Cloutier, Mike Ricci and Paul Kariya.
Last Worn By: Paul Kariya (2003-04)

#37 – Ryan O’Reilly
Colorado’s second selection (second round, 33rd overall) in June’s draft, O’Reilly will be wearing No. 37 at rookie camp after donning a No. 57 jersey at development camp earlier this summer. Like Duchene, O’Reilly sported a No. 9 sweater last season while playing for the OHL’s Erie Otters.
Last Worn By: T.J. Hensick (2007-09)

#48 – Stefan Elliott
Selected shortly after O’Reilly in the second round of June’s draft (49th overall), Elliott wore No. 68 at development camp but will occupy No. 48 at rookie camp. The defenseman suited up as No. 6 last year for the Saskatoon Blades.
Last Worn By: Kyle Cumiskey (2006-09)

#60 – Brandon Maxwell
Maxwell, who spent the last two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development in Ann Arbor, Mich., wore No. 60 at development camp and will sport that same jersey number when he hits the ice for rookie camp on Sept. 9.
Last Worn By: Jose Theodore (2006-08)

#75 – Tyson Barrie
Like Maxwell, Barrie has been assigned the same number he wore during July’s development camp. The defenseman skated as No. 4 last season for the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets.
Last Worn By: Walt Poddubny (1988-89)
