Monsters Win Overtime Thriller

The Lake Erie Monsters topped the Syracuse Crunch by a 3-2 count in overtime on Saturday (Jan. 19) in the team’s only game of the week.

Chris Stewart notched the game-winning goal 43 seconds into overtime off assists from Jeff Friesen and Brad Richardson. Mitch Love scored a shorthanded goal in the second period – his first of the season – and Dan DaSilva tied the game with 5:10 remaining to send the game to the extra session.

Tyler Weiman stopped 25-of-27 shots to improve his record to 7-10-0-1.

After a light schedule last week, the Monsters play four games in five nights beginning with a Tuesday night rematch against the Crunch.

-Top-ranked University of Michigan earned a weekend sweep against the University of Notre Dame behind a pair of strong performances from Billy Sauer. The junior netminder stopped 56-of-59 shots on the weekend to improve his record to 20-2-0 with a
.935 save percentage and 1.70 goals-against average.

-University of Minnesota sophomore Mike Carman notched a goal in the Gophers’ 2-1 win over the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday. The second-period tally, Carman’s first of the season, proved to be the eventual game-winner.

-Justin Mercier recorded his 18th goal of the season as the Miami (Ohio) University RedHawks earned a 6-1 win over Lake Superior State University on Friday.

-Kevin Montgomery racked up five assists in three games for London over the weekend. The defenseman assisted on the game-tying and game-winning goals in London’s 5-2 win over Owen Sound on Friday and then added another pair of helpers in the Knights’ 5-2 victory over the Plymouth Whalers the following night. Montgomery capped off the weekend with an assist in London’s 9-3 rout of the Kitchener Rangers. He leads all London defensemen with 26 points (6g/20a) in 40 contests.

-Peterborough Petes goaltender Trevor Cann stopped 38-of-40 shots to earn his 14th victory of the season against Mississauga on Friday. The following night, the Petes received a 51-save performance from Cann but dropped a 5-4 shootout decision.

-Indiana Ice forward Paul Carey recorded a pair of assists in two games against the Omaha Lancers last week. Carey ranks second in the USHL with 20 goals and eighth with 37 points.
