Lake Erie Drops Three Close Games

The Lake Erie Monsters dropped a trio of one-goal decisions this past week. Lake Erie was topped by Grand Rapids, 3-2, on Wednesday (Dec. 5) to open the week before losing a pair of contests to Rockford over the weekend. The Monsters were edged by a 4-3 count in a shootout on Friday, followed by a 4-3 overtime loss on Saturday.

Brent Kelly had a goal and one assist for Lake Erie against Grand Rapids, while J.D. Corbin notched his first career AHL goal.

Ray Macias, Eric Healey and Chris Stewart each tallied a goal for the Monsters on Friday, while David Jones registered two goals and Stewart added another during Saturday’s contest.

The Monsters will face Syracuse at home on Wednesday (Dec. 12) before heading to Manitoba for a weekend set (Dec. 14-15).

-University of Michigan goaltender Billy Sauer stopped 27 shots in a 4-2 victory over Bowling Green State University on Friday to earn the 50th victory of his collegiate career. Sauer now owns a 14-2-0 record with a 2.06 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage this season.

-University of North Dakota freshman Brad Malone registered his first collegiate goal Friday in the Fighting Sioux’s 4-2 win over the University of Minnesota. In Saturday’s rematch, Gopher captain Derek Peltier notched his sixth assist of the season in a 4-3 Minnesota victory.

-Boston University’s Kevin Shattenkirk recorded an assist during the Terriers’ 3-2 exhibition victory over the U.S. National Under-18 Team, a squad which the BU freshman captained a year ago.

-Ohio State University forward Tom Fritsche had an assist on Friday in a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Lawrence University. Fritsche ranks second on the Buckeyes with 10 points (2g/8a).

-On Sunday, the Saginaw Spirit completed a five-player trade that sent Nigel Williams to the Eastern Conference-leading Belleville Bulls. Williams’ first game with his new team could come as soon as Wednesday, when the Bulls host the Ottawa 67’s.

-Kevin Montgomery scored a goal and added one assist in London’s 4-0 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Friday. The defenseman followed up that performance by adding another goal in Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Kitchener Rangers.

-Calgary forward T.J. Galiardi erupted for four assists during the Hitmen’s 7-3 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday, giving the WHL rookie 14 points (1g/13a) in his last 13 contests.

-Cedar Rapids goaltender Kent Patterson saw his first action of the season following sports hernia surgery that kept him sidelined for the team's first 18 games. In his return, Patterson stopped 23-of-25 shots in a 5-2 victory over Sioux Falls.

-Paul Carey notched a goal in back-to-back games against Chicago this weekend. Carey ranks second on the Indiana Ice and third in the USHL with 29 points (19g/10a) through 21 games.
