Jarome Iginla made it official on Monday at a news conference in Calgary, Alberta, as the former Colorado Avalanche forward retired from the NHL after 20 seasons in the league. He spent most of his last three campaigns in Denver.
The Edmonton native was selected by the Dallas Stars with the 11th overall section in the 1995 draft, but he never played for the team as he was soon traded to the Calgary Flames. He spent 15-plus seasons in Calgary was named captain of the club in 2003-04, a season that ended in Western Conference title for the Flames.
Colorado signed Iginla to a three-year contract as a free agent on July 1, 2014, and the right wing went on to score 124 points (59 goals and 65 assists) in 225 games over the course of three seasons. The future hall of famer hit several milestones during his time with the Avalanche, including scoring his 600th goal, registering his 1,200th point, earning his 1,000 penalty minute and suiting up in his 1,500th game.
